I discovered something amazing this week! One of my local libraries has a somewhat secret basement filled with extra books. When they have too many of one book, or they need to make room, they store the extras and sell them for 25¢ to 50¢.
These are just the books I bought for myself. I got a lot for my kiddos, too! Total amount spent: $29.

I have read a few of these, but I didn't have copies for my shelves. Others I have been wanting to read for years and never had the time. I just couldn't pass up this opportunity! My husband and I had to carry the girls so we could roll the books in the stroller. I'm sure we looked ridiculous, but books make us happy.
I loved Bitter Spirits, so you can imagine my excitement over seeing The Anatomical Shape of a Heart by Jenn Bennett. There were also a few 2017 books like, The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee and The Secret History of Us by Jessi Kirby.
One thing that upset me... this library is attempting to sell Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs). They have them listed as $1, but the cover clearly states that these books are not to be sold. Is there a proper way to handle this? Have you had a similar experience?
Ooooh! SO many good ones and so cheap!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how to handle the ARC question because, clearly, a library should understand not to sell arc's right??
For What It's Worth
I was SO EXCITED. Their YA section was massive, so I didn't have time to look through the Adult Romance. Next time!
DeleteRight?! They SHOULD know better, which is why I'm not sure how to handle it.
AMAZING haul!! I love bargain books!
ReplyDeleteMe too! Now I need my husband to build me another bookshelf.
DeleteWhooooaaa that IS an amazing discovery! All those books for $29!!! But hmm, that is a problem about the ARCs :-/ Not sure how to handle that either.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW. I'M SO HAPPY.
DeleteThe ARC thing is really bothering me. They have the ARCs listed for more than all the other books, too. It makes me think they know exactly what they're doing.
Oh my gosh! That is amazing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could ask them if they have seen that they are arcs and if they know they aren't allowed to be sold like this? Just conversationally? I mean, I still come across a lot of people online that have no idea.
Really? It just baffles me because most ARCs clearly state that they are not to be sold. The people I interacted with were just volunteers, so I was going to see if there was someone else at the library I could talk to.
DeleteWow that's amazing- that many books for $29. I want that library lol! I see Glow and The Secret History of Us in that mix- I've read both of those. I really likd Secret History. Grave Mercy also. And I read the first two Tricia Rayburn books but never did get to Dark Water. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteThat's funny about the stroller! Good for you guys :)
I'll share the library with you! I was really excited to see THE SECRET HISTORY OF US. It never made it on the shelves as a library book, so it's still nice and shiny.
DeleteA twin stroller is good for many things, lol. My toddler tries to sit in it sometimes, but he's getting too big.
My library doesn't sell ARC's so I have no idea what to say about that. However your sale is excellent!! My library sells paperbacks 3/$1 so Its easy for me to keep to a budget plus get some goodreads!!

Three books for $1 is awesome! I love finding great deals like that.
DeleteOur library does that on occasion. Sometimes they put books out front that have been donated to them for that price. They also have a bookstore for pretty cheap and great book deals. You got a great haul!!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever said anything to them about it? I mentioned it this weekend, and I was told that they receive the books as donations and then put them out to sell. She said if a book doesn't get put on a shelf, they either stay in storage or get tossed in the trash. So, what is the better option? Do they sell the ARC for a small ($1) profit, or do they throw the book away?
DeleteWe have a new and used bookstore in our area that sometimes sells ARCs. Totally illegal, right? I love the bookstore, so I've never said anything, but still ...doesn't seem right. Although I hate tossing ARCs in the recycle, too, so I don't know what's better.
ReplyDeleteI usually donate mine, or ask if someone would like them. School libraries can use ARCs, and so can the individual classrooms.
DeleteFirst time visiting your blog L and ... oh wow you have a great pile here. So many dark Gothic covers. I feel I want to read them ALL :) Enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you stopped by! Thanks! I can't wait to read them. ๐
