Domino (#1-2) by Gail Simone

Domino (#1-2) by Gail Simone, David Baldeón (Illustrator), Greg Land (Illustrator)
Synopsis (via Goodreads): Impossible curves. Impossible shots. Impossible targets. Marvel's #1 soldier of fortune is back in an explosive new ongoing series! The product of a failed super-soldier program, Neena Thurman always made her own luck as the sharpshooting mercenary known as Domino… but what happens when her own powers betray her? The hunter becomes the hunted as every mercenary in the game smells blood in the water! Plus: A pair of beloved Marvel characters return!

I was really excited when I saw Marvel was releasing a new Domino comic! I've always thought she was an interesting character, but she's also not someone we see every day. I normally wait until I've read at least three issues of a new volume before commenting or reviewing, but I am loving this!

In the first two issues we see a few familiar faces (Colossus, Hulk, Deadpool and others), and it's nice to read about them outside of their own comics. I guess you could say the entire Marvel Universe overlaps in one way or another, but we don't often see them interacting with Domino and her team. Also, when push comes to shove...these guys will fight for their friends. The majority of them are mercenaries, so it can get a little messy.

I'll be honest when I say I went into this one a little unsure about Domino's powers and general abilities. It's the first time they've been explained (to me) in great detail, so now I have a better understanding of how she uses them how they benefit her. It's not like she can activate her luck to assist her when she fights, but it's there when she needs it. Luck might not always be kind to her, but it makes sure she survives.

Two issues and I'm hooked! The last one left me feeling anxious and angry, which is when waiting a month between issues becomes brutal. The villains are unfamiliar (to me at least), which makes their actions incredibly surprising. I have no idea what they're trying to do.

If you're looking to start something new, I highly recommend this! It's only on the second issue, so it wouldn't take very long to catch up. There's a lot of action, dependable friends, Deadpool, and even an adorable puppy! The story itself is engaging, the artwork is phenomenal, and Domino is a very likeable and complex character. I would like to learn more about her past, but I cannot wait to see what happens next!

    1. They're stunning! Domino loves her weapons. While I'm opposed to guns in general, I understand this is a comic about a mercenary. It's no different from reading about Deadpool. People get upset about her having guns, but it's okay for Iron Man to blast people with his suit.

  5. Ooh Domino! I don't know much about her and couldn't remember her powers- sounds like it's luck- based? Love that first cover. I should try this.

    1. Luck-based...yes? It's hard to explain, but they do a wonderful job in the comic! It's like it has a mind of its own... kind of? It's been a really fun read so far!

  8. I'm really not up to date with the superhero or Marvel universe but god damn those are some sexy covers. This sounds like one I could get on board with. Do you need to know about the Marvel universe? I know characters in passing but wouldn't understand their relationships and how the interconnect though. I might hunt down the first issue regardless and see how I go. The mention of a puppy has me sold. Awesome review Linds, thrilled you've found a new series to get stuck into ♥♥♥

    1. I love the covers for this series! The artwork is amazing.

You really don't need to know too much about the Marvel Universe. Each individual comic does a pretty good job of giving you all the necessary information. Like, I didn't know too much about Domino, but I feel like I know her pretty well after two issues. Her team is made up of people I'm unfamiliar with, but they get their own detailed descriptions, too.

Adorable puppy! Even Deadpool thinks so, lol. I definitely think you should look into this one and give it a try! I think you'll be surprised! You can always buy a digital copy through Amazon, if you're having trouble locating a physical copy. I know some libraries do comics, too.
