Final Thoughts [5]
Astonishing X-Men (#8-12) by Charles Soule

Astonishing X-Men (#8-12) by Charles Soule, Gerardo Sandoval (Illustrator), Greg Land (Illustrator)
I really enjoyed this one at the beginning (read my review of the first seven issues here), but I stopped being as invested in the story once they left the Astral Plane. There was a lot going on... and a lot of it didn't make sense. I decided to finish the series since there were only going to be twelve issues, but now I wish I'd stopped after #7.

Astonishing X-Men had an amazing group of characters, but they all played minor parts in the overall story. The author would occasionally hint at more, but everything came back to Psylocke, Professor X and Fantomex. Logan, Mystique, Rogue, Bishop, Gambit, Archangel--I wish they had all been given larger roles.

In the end, I lost interest in the story. There was one issue that was unbelievably trippy, and it was hard to follow the speech bubbles and the illustrations. Imagine a page in a comic book blending together until it's a giant blob of a picture... The ending was somewhat predictable and very unsatisfying. I think it had the potential to be more than it was, and I disagree with how it concluded.

  1. Aww, it stinks when that happens. Just pretend everything after #7 didn't really happen. :D Love the covers!

    1. Comics have made me question death, because people never seem to stay dead, or they appear from another timeline/parallel universe. It's hard to keep up with sometimes! Bishop can travel through time and space, Logan has been many things, and now the Professor... it's hard to form attachments and be saddened by death. I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop!

    2. Comics with characters I've gotten really attached to in the past: All-New Wolverine (Lara and Gabby), Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Peter Parker, MJ, and Annie (The Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows), and now Domino. I think all of their stories have been/are written really well, and I'm not constantly looking over my shoulder for something bad to happen and then unhappen.

  2. I never tried the X-Men comics. It's just too bad that it changed along the story to confuse you

    1. They were fighting one guy at the beginning, but after the Astral Plane different people/things kept appearing that didn't really flow with the rest of the story.

  3. Aw that's too bad. With a cast like that it could have been good- or at least ended better, since like you said it sounds like the first seven were okay! I've never really gotten the Fantomex character either...

    1. Fantomex was with Gambit at the beginning... apparently Gambit owes him, so Fantomex refuses to leave his side until the debt is paid. We're never told what Gambit owes him, and we end with Gambit being told that his debt still hasn't been paid. It was so strange, because I have no idea what they're talking about!

There were sooo many wonderful characters they could have taken advantage of, but sadly they did not. I would have enjoyed seeing a Rogue-Mystique team up! They sort of just fight in the background, or they're incapacitated in some way. *shrugs*
