Runaways (#8-10) by Rainbow Rowell

Runaways (#8-10) by Rainbow Rowell, Kris Anka (Illustrator)
Synopsis (via Goodreads): "BEST FRIENDS FOREVER" STARTS NOW! The Runaways welcome Karolina's girlfriend, JULIE POWER of the POWER PACK! Well, most of them do. Some have mixed feelings…but they'll all be glad to have an experienced hero around when one of the Universe's most fearsome super villains invades the hostel!!!

First of all, the synopsis overexaggerates. "...but they'll all be glad to have an experienced hero around..." wasn't even an issue. Yes, someone unexpected shows up, but invades isn't the word I would use. The Runaways also do their own thing despite Julie being there, so her experience wasn't really relevant. Moving on!

I never read the synopsis for a comic until I'm writing its review. They're usually a series I'm already reading, so I have a good idea where the story is and don't want any spoilers. However, I haven't read issues four through seven, so it was nice to see that eight started its own arc. I wasn't too terribly lost. I started this series a little late, and I haven't had a chance to get the issues I'm missing. I will though!

I love Karolina and Julie together! Julie and the Power Pack were new-to-me, so I'm not entirely sure what her specific history is. It didn't detract from the story at all, which was nice. She was just there to visit her girlfriend and got caught up in their shenanigans.

Dr. Doom is everywhere these days, or at least in all of the comics I'm reading. He was in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Marvel Two-In-One, and there was something else... Gwenpool was ages ago. Ah! All-New Wolverine. Dude Doom gets around.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Runaways insisting that they're not a team, but a family. Shouldn't they be both? Julie asked the same question, and she also pointed out how completely unprepared they are for danger. There are no plans or backup plans, they don't debrief after a fight, and they tend to make things up as they go. Julie also pointed out that those methods haven't worked for them in the past, because people have died. I'm wondering if this is going to be where they start taking things more seriously.

I would also like to know what's going on with Nico and her staff. I'm pretty sure that's something I missed in a previous issue, which only makes me want to get them sooner rather than later. I know she can only use a spell once, but now it seems like calling her staff at all causes her pain.

Runaways is definitely one I will continue reading! If you enjoy Rainbow Rowell's books, you would probably love this!

    1. Yes! I'm reading it to my son, which means it'll take me a week or two to get through. We're enjoying it so far! However, the Crawlers make me uncomfortable. I was going to say they make my skin crawl, but... haha.

  3. OMG you're reading these out of order? Skipping issues? Gasp! You're killing my little OCD heart, Lindsi! LOL

    1. It's different with comics! I would prefer not having to skip, but #8 started a new arc/story. I wasn't lost or confused, but there were a few references that I didn't understand, like why Nico doesn't want to use her staff. It didn't impact my enjoyment! I also plan on going back and reading the others. :)

    2. I think comics have to be like that... some series are on #800, so it would be crazy to expect new readers to start at #1. There's no way that would work, and some of the issues wouldn't be easy to find (Daredevil, Spider-Man, etc.). Every few issues they start a new arc so new readers can jump in without needing to start at the beginning. Yes, I'm sure there are little things that get missed, but you can enjoy everything going forward. It all follows one main story, but each arc is also its own story... does that make sense? I feel like I'm not explaining this very well, lol.

    3. Nope, you explained it just fine. And I get it... but I also know that it would drive me crazy. The way my mind works just would *not* allow me to jump in at a certain point. Could not do it. Thank goodness I'm not a comics reader because I'm sure that's the norm across the board!

    4. I still get confused by all of the numbering that goes on in comics. They seem to have more than one... like a current number and an overall number. I just let Jacob deal with that and read whatever I want without worrying about it. ;)

I used to get really stressed out if I didn't read things in the right order, but now it doesn't bother me! I'll even start a book series in the middle, if it's supposed to be able to stand on its own. <3

  4. The Power Pack girl is in this? Interesting! I kinda like it when other parts of the Marvel universe show up in Runaways, and sometimes I don't- it just depends on who it is and if it feels like it works, since Runaways sometimes has a different vibe? I always liked Karolina, and in the ones I'm reading (I'm still way back on Vaughn's run) it seemed like she wasn't getting lots of screen time- but I'm sure that changes.

    Doom gets overused, seems like.

I always liked Nico and her staff too. In fact her and Karolina were together at one point? Or at least interested/ That ship must have sailed ha ha. I'm so behind... :)

    1. I think Nico and Karolina have unresolved issues... I'm not 100% sure. Karolina and Julie (yes, the Power Pack girl) are currently dating (or were dating... this last issue was a rough one for Karolina). They're relationship is something right now, haha. I don't want to say too much in case you decide to read this one yourself one of these days. I love Julie with Karolina, though. They can totally fly together! Date night in the sky? Yes, please!

      Ugh, Doom or his bots.

    2. Doom has to be used sparingly or he's booooring... at least I think. And date night in the sky? That's so cool. Glad they are a good couple. :)

    3. They don't actually have a date in the sky together... I just really want them to! Haha!

  5. I love how gorgeous the covers of each comic is. I think my favorite has to be the first cover. There is something so cute about it <3 Great review as always!

    1. I love the first and third covers! I like Karolina and Julie flying around together, and I also like the Alice in Wonderland vibe with Molly. Most of the covers for this series have been really great!

  6. I’ve only liked one Rainbow Rowell book so I’m not sure if I’d like these. They do intrigue me though.

    1. It's still relatively new, so you shouldn't have too much trouble if you want to start! You can start from the beginning, or #8 was a new arc. If you do decide to try them, let me know what you think! :)

  8. I love Rainbow Rowell’s novels. I’m curious about this series, but I’ve never read a comic that I liked before. I’m nervous to read any more of them.

    1. Maybe you just haven't found the right one? This one is relatively new, so you wouldn't have any trouble jumping in. I would suggest starting with these three since they start a new arc. If you like it, you can always go back and get the others! Also, All-New Hawkeye with Kate Bishop by Kelly Thompson, All-New Wolverine by Tom Taylor, Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows (sooo good) by Jody Houser, and Domino by Gail Simone. Those are some of my favorites! Domino is pretty new, too.
