There weren't that many comics this week, but there's also an extra Wednesday this month. All of our monthly comics will be spread out over five weeks instead of four.
Blackbird is going to be a new one for me! I saw a flyer for it at my LCS and was immediately intrigued by the blurb. "Blackbird is a coming of age story about Nina, a young woman living in Los Angeles who discovers a hidden world of magic when her sister is kidnapped by a mystical beast." It sounds awesome, right? The flyer shows more of the characters, including a cat with three eyes, and I sort of wish it had been the cover for the first issue. I hope it's as good as it looks!
Magic Order is daaaaarrrk. A family member died the last issue (people die every issue), so things are more personal this time. The prodigal son returns (I think), and I hope we get to see why everyone thinks he's so awesome. They've played him up the last few issues, even though he's made it clear he wants nothing to do with that world anymore. Despite his lack of involvement, I believe the villains will seek him out regardless. I also want to know more about what happened to his daughter... It's starting to seem like he may have been at fault, but you never know.
Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, that highlights upcoming releases that we're anticipating and excited to read. It's a spinoff of the feature Waiting on Wednesday that was hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

It's something she hasn't been able to stop, ever since an accident years ago. Now, in a new town, Jenny has the strange feeling that someone is watching her every move. Will her arsonist ways be exposed? Or is the burning truth deep inside her a greater danger?

I've never read a book about arson, so I'm curious to see what this book has to offer on the subject. How does it impact someone's life? What compels them to set things on fire?
The blurb also mentions a "creepy, possibly haunted town," which makes this a great October book! Twenty more days isn't too long of a wait...
Interesting...I haven't read anything about an arsonist before so that's a bit different.

ReplyDeleteThey flyer immediately caught my attention with the colors, but then I read about magic and a three-eyed cat. It seemed like I was destined to read this comic. ;)

DeleteI think I've seen Watch You Burn a few times - never really paid attention to the synopsis, but now I'm actually interested in looking into it some more! Blackbird sounds like City of Bones for some reason, but maybe it's just me, haha.
ReplyDeleteI've never read anything about an arsonist, so I thought it would be an interesting perspective! I didn't make the connection between Blackbird and City of Bones, but it's also been awhile since I've read the latter. :)
DeleteI keep putting Watch You Burn off. Loved Searcy's debut, but keep hearing meh things about this one. I will probably still read it, but I have to be in the right place for a dark book.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've read the author's other book, but I would have to double check. It's not often that I'm in the mood to read something dark, and I'm still reeling from Sadie, but I feel like I squeeze more of those in around Halloween. Maybe it's the October vibe? I don't know.

DeleteOoh Blackbird looks pretty awesome. I love that sort of neon-ish cover. And a three eyed cat? Color me interested. Millar I'm not a huge fan of, but Coipel does amazing art. I loved his Marvel stuff.
ReplyDeleteI haven't enjoyed some of his other stuff, but I'm weirdly invested in Magic Order. It's definitely not what I would usually read, but there's just something about it... there's a lot of violence, death, and uncomfortable situations. It's also my first comic with nudity, so that was different -- haha.
DeleteI'll let you know how Blackbird is when I have a chance to read it, lol. I think the three-eyed cat is what really sold it for me. ;)

DeleteI haven't heard of Watch You Burn before. I'm curious about what the accident was... but even so it's hard to think Jenny would be a sympathetic main character. How likable can an arsonist be? LOL
ReplyDeleteRight?? I was wondering the same thing. Does the author make it a mental illness, or some type of disease that she's dealing with and trying to control? Is there something in her past that ties her to fire, or a reason she feels drawn to burn things? I feel like there are a lot of potential directions for this story, and I'm curious how the author will portray the main character.
