Expected publication: October 26th by Wednesday Books
Synopsis (via Goodreads): "A deftly-plotted tale about ambition and belonging, Bright Ruined Things takes Shakespeare’s The Tempest and brilliantly reimagines its themes of family and love. Cohoe writes with a magic that dazzles and cuts right to the core." - Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights
Forbidden magic, a family secret, and a night to reveal it all...
The only life Mae has ever known is on the island, living on the charity of the wealthy Prosper family who control the magic on the island and the spirits who inhabit it. Mae longs for magic of her own and to have a place among the Prosper family, where her best friend, Coco, will see her as an equal, and her crush, Miles, will finally see her. Now that she’s eighteen, Mae knows her time with the Prospers may soon come to an end.
But tonight is First Night, when the Prospers and their high-society friends return to the island to celebrate the night Lord Prosper first harnessed the island’s magic and started producing aether – a magical fuel source that has revolutionized the world. With everyone returning to the island, Mae finally has the chance to go after what she’s always wanted.
When the spirits start inexplicably dying, Mae starts to realize that things aren’t what they seem. And Ivo, the reclusive, mysterious heir to the Prosper magic, may hold all the answers – including a secret about Mae’s past that she doesn’t remember. As Mae and her friends begin to unravel the mysteries of the island, and the Prospers’ magic, Mae starts to question the truth of what her world was built on.
In this YA fantasy, Samantha Cohoe wonderfully mixes magic and an atmospheric setting into a fantastically immersive world, with characters you won’t be able to forget.

DeleteI don't think I've read The Tempest, but I'm always up for a good retelling!
ReplyDeleteThe Tempest is one of the few Shakespeare books I have read, haha. I believe it was required reading my junior year? I can't remember. I just know I still have the school's copy on my bookshelves somewhere. ๐
DeleteShould I have said plays instead of books? I never know. ๐
DeleteI never read The Tempest though I did read a few of S's plays as a student. Nice cover for the book.
ReplyDeleteI believe The Tempest was one I read in high school, but it's been so long... I just know I still have the school's copy on my shelves, haha. Whoops!
DeleteI LOVE the cover of Bright Ruined Things. And I love Shakespeare re-imaginings so I guess this is a must-read for me!
ReplyDeleteI am obsessed with the book's cover! The Tempest is one of the few Shakespeare books/plays I've read, so I'm excited to see how it's retold. Wasn't Kagawa's Iron Fey series based on The Tempest? I can't remember...
DeleteAre you liking Marvel's stuff right now?
ReplyDeleteI'm actually not reading a lot of Marvel! Mostly I get stuff from Boom! Studios. Have you tried any of their stuff? I think IDW is the other one I'm pulling comics from.
DeleteNot into comics at all and I've read my first Graphic Novel at the ripe age of 41!! But it's a good idea and I think there will be a few people on the blog who might love this.
ReplyDeleteBright Ruined Things look really good though!

I didn't get into comics until a few years ago! It's a nice change of pace after I've been reading books. The artwork is always so amazing, and the stories are usually pretty great. :)
DeleteI haven't read any of these. My daughter likes comics but has only read a few.
ReplyDeleteWhat does she like to read? I have suggestions! ;)
DeleteThose covers are really great ! I'm not much into comics but I happen to read them. These days, I've been binge reading... mangas ! Because my youngest daughter adores them and we have tons of them home ! So, until I can get back to the library... ;)
ReplyDeleteI've never been able to get into those! I love watching anime, but I have a hard time reading it. ๐
DeleteBright Ruined Things has a gorgeous cover and sounds lovely. And yay for all the new books! I hope you enjoy reading them ^.^
ReplyDeleteIt has taken me months to get on top of my reading after the move and pandemic! I am finally on the verge of being - wait for it - CAUGHT UP. ;)
