I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com (Cosmic Chaos, #1) by Kimberly Lemming

Synopsis (via Goodreads): A hilarious and sexy romance about a woman who gets dropped on a strange planet only to fall for not one, but two, aliens, from the author of I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf.

Dorothy Valentine is close to getting her PhD in wildlife biology when she’s attacked by a lion. On the bright side, she’s saved! On the not-so-bright side, it’s because they’re abducted by aliens. In her scramble to escape, Dory and the lion commandeer an escape pod and crash-land on an alien planet that has...dinosaurs?

Dory and her new lion bestie, Toto, are saved in the nick of time by a mysterious and sexy alien, Sol. On their new adventure, they team up with the equally hot, equally dangerous Lok, who may or may not be a war criminal. Whether it be trauma, fate, or intrigue, Dory can’t resist the attraction that’s developing in their trio....

As this ragtag group of misfits explore their new planet, Dory learns more about how and why they’ve all ended up together, battles more prehistoric creatures than she imagined (she imagined...zero), and questions if she even wants to go back home to Earth in this hilarious and steamy alien romance adventure comedy romp.

I received an ARC from NetGalley via the publisher in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own. Any quotes I use are from an unpublished copy and may not reflect the finished product.

I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com
is something I decided to read on a whim after initially thinking I would pass on reviewing it. I'm really glad I decided to give this one a chance, because it was exactly the sort of book I needed in my life right now. The story was absolutely ridiculous, the logistics felt half-balked and not at all believable, and the romantic elements always seemed to happen randomly and without any natural buildup. However, I will say that it was a lot of fun to read and was very similar to Ice Planet Barbarians. If that's your jam, definitely pick this one up!

Dorothy is a researcher with a sailor's mouth and a stubborn personality. She may have somehow ended up with a talking lion she named Toto (those were the only two Wizard of Oz references I picked up on), but she's not going to let him or two pushy aliens tell her what to do. Never mind that she's on an alien planet with pink dinosaurs or bullfrogs the size of a car, she and her now-friendly lion are going to do what they want, when they want. When their alien abductors (not the pushy ones I previously mentioned) make another appearance, Dorothy (Dory for short) is quick to demand answers. Unfortunately for her, they're very interested in her new relationships and doing what they can to help things develop romantically (non-consensual body modifications and serums that alter someone's brain chemistry).

The author didn't try very hard to make this one believable, so be prepared to suspend any and all disbelief to make it through the story. Spilled alien goop and kissing are apparently all that's needed to get rid of any language barriers one might expect, while also allowing her to speak to lions and another animals. It was such a wild concept — one that wasn't explained very well — and I couldn't help but laugh and shake my head. It was also confusing when the lion or aliens needed clarification on certain "human" words, but were fully capable of saying many others. Lok calling her "gorgeous" and understanding sarcasm and colloquialisms made it hard to fully get on board with the author's reasonings and justifications.

I'm still not sure how we get from A to Z in this book, but it was a really quick read (maybe four hours on my Kindle) and it made me laugh often. Whether it was the ridiculousness of the characters, the situations they found themselves in, or the absurdity of the story itself, I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com was enjoyable for exactly what it was: a subpar, absolutely bananas plot with steamy alien hookups (they have tails and oddly shaped members!). (★★★☆☆)

  1. Great review! I'm so looking forward to reading this. It sounds so wild and fun and that pretty much sums up Lemming's books (at least the ones I've read). Suspension of disbelief is a necessity but honestly, her books always have me laughing so much that I don't mind how ridiculous and implausible and underdeveloped they are. They're the perfect feel-good good-time reads for those moments when you want to pick something up but the brain just isn't on board, lol. πŸ˜‚ I love them! Also, this cover is amazing, haha.

    1. This was my first book by the author, but I'll definitely be picking up more! It's just like you said, sometimes your brain isn't on board and you need a book that will make you laugh even if it's ridiculous and implausible. The cover sums this book up perfectly. πŸ˜‚ The only oddity is the camera. She didn't have it on the new planet with her.

  2. I cannot comment on the book as it is way out of my comfort zone, but the titles in this series are hilarious. Maybe the story wasn't perfect, but at least it made you laugh.

    1. It's definitely going to have it's audience! I feel like books like this aren't for everyone, and that's okay. You really have to let go of any expectations for a plot or character development to get through them. πŸ˜…

  7. Oh wow this one sounds utterly insane and like it has a lot of bizarre things going on. It sounds like a fun experience though and I know that this authors romances tend to be pretty popular. I'm glad you enjoyed this although I'm not sure that it would be for me. It just sounds so weird. Although I do like the whole communicating with animals idea. Maybe I'll try it if I enjoy the authors earlier books πŸ€”

    1. It was extremely weird, lol. Communicating with animals only happens twice, so don't go into this thinking it's a large portion of the book. She basically uses her kissing powers to speak to other aliens so they can understand each other and her. It was fun overall, but probably not one I'd read again.

    1. I'd recommend seeing if your library had a copy, or maybe Libby and Hoopla. It was fun, but probably not one you want to buy and add to your shelves.
